A Little About Skimmer

I've been sewing since I was a little girl, I love to sew and I like coming up with patterns to make things for myself instead of buying them. I've made all sorts of things from baby clothes and curtains to chalk pots for rock climbing, always being creative with my designs.

When I started skydiving and got to the point that I was ready to try to Freefly, I decided to make my own Freefly suit to save some money. I did some research to find out what kind of fabrics and threads I needed to use to make a durable suit. The first Skimmer Suit was made of heavy cotton that was tye dyed and had a painting of the sun and moon that I did myself (it was a bit cheesy but I liked it). Little did I know that this would be the beginning of Skimmer Suits. People at the DZ liked my suit and several people asked me to make suits for them. Over the next five years I made Freefly suits as hobby for friends at the Dz. I had a lot of fun doing it and I got a kick out of seeing the suits that I had made on the people I had made them for.

Then two years ago I decided that I had had enough of my full time job and quit. Not knowing what I was going to do for a job I spent the next six months going back and forth on the options I had and couldnt make up my mind. With a lot of encouragement from my husband (actually he was rather pushy but I love him for it) I decided to make suits full time.

The only problem was that I needed to come up with an RW suit pattern to be a full service suitmaker. I mostly do RW jumps but, I never attempted to make an RW suit because I knew it would be difficult to come up with a good pattern. Then I spent several months making a lot of RW prototype suits, using my husband as a guinea pig since he is obsessed with 4-way, changing this and reworking that, until I came up with a design for both a womens and mens RW suit. During that time I also reworked my freefly suit design.

In January 2006 I officially opened Skimmer Suits. I have a small workshop in my home, where I sweat away the hours (listening to loud music) trying to build the perfect suit. My goal is to build a suit that is durable, designed for performance and that looks good too. I am always looking for ways to improve my suits (although I feel that I have come up with very good designs) and to provide excellent customer service.
